This is a new series featuring issues commonly part of what it means to own a windows operating system. If you have ever used anything running on Microsoft Windows, chances are you have being frustrated off your skull at least once in your life. The purpose of this series is to highlight the most common errors one is likely to occur when using windows, along with a possilble solution to the problem.Now onto the first entry on the series:
windows installer: this patch package cannot be opened
Now and then you will want to install a new software programme and you might happen upon thsi error. What this means is that Windows Installer, an essential windows NT component, is damaged and therefore you won't be able to access it in order to either install or uninstall new applications. The following registry key is likely to be damaged:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Installer\Products\DFAD2CEE8555CA04E8C905508C8F018E
All you have to do is open the windows registry keys manager (hit winkey + R, then type in regedit), go to this registry key and then deleted it. restart the computer so it can rebuild the registry file. That should be enough.
Works for: Windows XP.
Warning: any change in the windows registry may result in permanent damage to your system and should thereby be backed up just in case you need to return to the system's original registry state.
